ABSTRACT

Although perceived by consumers as important for the youthful appearance of skin, collagen in beauty products today is largely derived from animal and marine sources. But due to concerns about safety, quality, sustainability, supply and cultural acceptability have limited the use of collagen in cosmetics. Advancements in biotechnology, as well as associated downstream processing and industrialization development, have now enabled a revolutionary new approach to collagen production. Through precision fermentation, a new collagen polypeptide has been generated that is skin-identical, vegan, halal-certified, mass-balanced, and sourced from sustainable feedstocks. This recombinant collagen has demonstrated a sophisticated dual action that prevents degradation and boosts biosynthesis of the extracellular matrix through well-aligned in-vitro, ex-vivo and in-vivo test results. This new source of collagen can replace animal-derived collagens, since it is structurally identical in nature to a specifically selected section of human collagen type III. Compared to animal or marine collagens, this recombinant collagen is not only more sustainable but also delivers higher efficacy in skin care.

Wyatt Johnson is the Global Customer Projects Manager for the BioActives Segment, Active Ingredients PL in the Business Line Care Solutions at Evonik Nutrition & Care. Wyatt holds a BS in Biology and MS in Science Education from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Fl and a PhD in Chemical Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. He has worked for 7 years within Evonik technical application roles in North America, and for his current role globally for the BioActives; supporting Evonik customers in the beauty industry, and creating more values from technical standpoint for Evonik products.
